Film Review: Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them

I know what you're thinking psychic, didn't that film come out ages ago? The answer to which is yes, in fact, I think it came out in November last year. I suspect it isn't still showing in cinemas, but who knows? Anyway, despite my not so impeccable timing, I still wanted to write this review.

So Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them was written by J. K. Rowling however, the film isn't 100% related to Harry Potter. It's set in the same world, one in which there is a Wizard and 'Muggle' community however, the more exact setting is 1920's New York city.

There's a completely new set of characters and the setting is pretty much where the connection to Harry Potter ends. The film follows the story of Newt (Eddie Redmayne) who is trying to find so-called 'Fantastic Beasts'.

Getting into the actual review... I really enjoyed the film, the story line was interesting throughout, don't really want to say anything else about it, in case I give anything away though!

The graphics and special effects were incredible and whilst I didn't see it in 3D, it's easy to imagine how they could have added another dimension.

As someone who watched all the Harry Potter films (and read the books!) I'd have said Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them is pitched at an older audience. For starters, the film has very few children/teens in it, indicating that perhaps that isn't the target market. If you have watched the Harry Potter films, then you'll know that they get darker as the series goes on. This was perhaps to target the aging audience (people who watched from the start of the series). Personally, I think Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them caters for the audience who watched the Harry Potter films growing up, and are now adults. This is, of course, very specific, but basically the film isn't as dark as the last few Harry Potter films however, in my opinion, is pitched at an older audience.

Overall, I enjoyed the film, and would probably give it a four out of five stars. If you've seen the Harry Potter films and enjoyed them, then I would definitely say it's worth a watch. At the same time though, if you're new to the realm of the Wizarding world, it really makes no difference if you haven't seen the Harry Potter films, so I'd say watch if you're into the adventure/fantasy genre!

I hope you found this review helpful! Let me know if you've seen the film, and whether you liked it in the comments below!

Thanks for reading,

P.S. Happy new year!! I hope everyone's had a good start to 2017! Also, bit of a side-note, you probably didn't notice :) but I got rid of all my social media links at the end of blog posts so now I can just add random and completely irrelevant stuff. For example, my current blogging schedule is: Tuesdays, Fridays and Sundays. I'm aiming to put all posts up at 21:00 NZ time and I'm only writing that, cause once I put this post up, I'll feel more obliged to stick to the time! :) I also feel like I probably should have written somewhere that I'm horrible at film reviews, mainly because I don't know how much information to give away about the film! If you've got any tips for reviews please leave them in the comments!
